Police fire on fleeing cattle smugglers | | | JAMMU, Apr 28: Police today fired a single shot, bursting a tyre of the truck which broke their naka and sped away on the national highway near Hatli in Kathua. The truck (JK02X/4494) carried eight oxen, which were being smuggled from Punjab to Kashmir, SSP, Kathua, J L Sharma said. He said industrial estate police post incharge, SI Nayat Ali, who had laid a naka on the highway near Hatli Morh, signalled the truck to stop for checking.Its driver, however, ignored the signal and sped away by breaking the police barrier with the intention of crushing the cops, the SSP added. He said the SI chased the truck and fired a bullet on it near Kharote Morh. The bullet hit the tyre and burst it as a result of which the truck came to a screeching halt. While driver Surinder Singh, son of Janak Singh of Chak Mohammadyar, R S Pura, was arrested, cattle smuggler Mohammad Sadiq, who was in the truck, he added. The truck and the eight oxen were seized. A hunt was on to apprehend the escaped cattle smuggler.Police had registered a case in this connection under sections 307, 188 and 427/34 of RPC and 3/5 of PCA Act.
