Official sources said that the BRO needs adequate funds not only for maintaining the strategic highways and road links in the far-flung border areas but also for upgrading sever all roads in the border belts. Men of the BRO have started getting ready for road clearance operations on Srinagar-Leh highway and Srinagar-Khardung la mountain highway which the BRO had constructed years ago. This is the second highest mountain road situated at a height of 18300 ft. Since the state Government's financial resources are meager it has decided to handover all the roads in the border belts to the BRO.In addition to the BRO is under pressure for upgrading and maintaining strategic border roads in Poonch-Rajouri sectors besides the road links in Kupwara, Keran, Machel, Tangdhar and Karnah. Official reports said that the BRO has prepared plans for rebuilding and renovating over 100-km road stretches in north Kashmir and in Poonch-Rajouri sectors so that the movement of passenger traffic and Army convoys remained hassle-free. Reports said that following the decision of the Government to develop roads all along the border with China in Ladakh the responsibilities of the BRO have increased and several hundred crores of rupees were being spent during the current financial year on the building of border roads in Ladakh touching China's border. Number of senior political leaders belonging to the border areas of Kupwara, Keran, Tangdhar, Gurez, Poonch, Rajouri are all praise for the BRO for having succeeded in keeping the border routes well maintained and operational even during difficult weather problems. They too have suggested to the Government of India to increase annual allocations for the BRO for road development projects in Jammu an Kashmir.
