• Even failures got good marks

JAMMU, Apr 29: Recently declared selection list of Combined Services Examination (CSE) for year 2009 by Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) has given befitting response to all those who ridicule government for not doing enough for promotion and propagation of Urdu in the state.
Of 1288 candidates who had been declared to have qualified the mains examination, almost 25 percent i.e. around 316 made it merely because of the marks secured by them in Urdu subject. Further, 143 of these 316 candidates i.e. around 48 percent of total Urdu candidates who appeared before high profile interview board of the commission made it to the final selection list released recently.
Of the 392 CSE qualified candidates, around 36 percent are with Urdu background i.e. 143 Urdu knowing candidates are likely to become part of police and administrative set-up. More importantly, all these 308 candidates including 143 who made it to the final list of the commission are seemingly experts in Urdu. All have secured more than 60 percent marks and in around 4 to 5 cases, candidates making it to the final selection list have failed to secure even 30 percent marks in the General Studies subject.
The marks cards bear testimony to the fact that had a majority of these candidates not kept Urdu as one of the optional; they would have failed to qualify even the mains examination. It is noteworthy to mention here that none of the other 24 subjects have been as scoring as has been the Urdu.
Barring the toppers, all other candidates have managed to qualify the examination on the strength of marks secured in Urdu. There is also a curious case of a candidate who has failed to secure even 28 percent marks in all other subjects but has secured 345 out of 600 in Urdu. Though this candidate has failed to qualify the examination but marks secured by him indicate the quality of Urdu being taught in Jammu and Kashmir.
Another interesting feature to note is that most of the Urdu candidates have fared well in the high profile interview of the commission. Of the few unfortunate cases is that of an Urdu student who has got 40 marks in the interview and has failed to make it to the final list by just two marks. He has secured 1126 marks in the open merit category.
Another case is of a student who has been awarded 20 marks in interview but has made it to the final selection list merely on the strength of marks secured by him in Urdu subject. What needs to be highlighted here is that barring Urdu, CSE results have put a question mark on quality of teaching in all other subjects since most of the candidates have been able to secure marks anywhere in comparison to marks secured in Urdu subject.
The results have rebutted claims of those who are generally seen raising a lot of hue and cry over the alleged lackadaisical attitude of government in promoting Urdu in the state. These have laid bare the facts that while there are innumerable young experts in Urdu subject, state has failed to produce experts of the same quality in all other subjects.
These results have given a hope to the state government that man of quality who know every aspect of state’s official language ‘Urdu’ have become part of the administrative and police set-up. They are likely to promote Urdu wherever they will be posted and would do everything possible to safeguard this official language.
However, what is required now is that state government has to do a lot of work to produce same quality of experts in other subjects. From General Studies to Anthropology to Zoology to Political Science, the results explicitly indicate that students have managed to just qualify the examination by getting a little above 35 percent marks. Thereafter, it is the high profile interview where they have secured from 190 to 205 marks and made it to the final selection list, the same would be unveiled in another part of this exclusive series of stories. Early Times has done a detailed analysis of the results of CSE and would be publishing it in a series starting from today.
