Various trade unions observe May Day

JAMMU, May 1: The Labour Day was celebrated across city as various trade union organisations held separate functions to mark the day.
To pay rich tributes to the martyrs of May Day, National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) organised a programme at Jain Sabha, Kali Janni.
Speaking on the occasion, president NMC Subash Shastri paid glowing tributes to May Day martyrs and demanded that this day be declared as Gazetted Holiday under Negotiable Instrument Act in recognition of the contributions of the working class in nation building.
Shatri informed the participants that a high power delegation of heads of various likeminded trade unions will visit New Delhi in the 3rd week of this month to urge the Prime Minister and other central leaders for providing a special package of Rs 5000 crore to J&K towards payment of 6th Pay Commission arrears and allied benefits to the employees and pensioners in one go.
He said that delegation will also meet Union Finance Minister, Dy Chairman Planning Commission and submit memorandums to them pleading for sanctioning a special package for meeting the demands of State employees and pensioners.
NMC leader said that the trade Union leaders will also call on the Union Home Minister and request him for declaring Jammu & Srinagar as B-1- cities.
Referring to the need for formulating a national pay policy, Shastri said that any pay commission setup by the Government of India should cover both central and the state Government employees so that its recommendation are implemented simultaneously through out the country to avoid any heart burning or agitation in any state.
Other demands raised by Shastri included release of salary of motivators working in the IWDP Akhnoor beside their regularization, conversation of seasonal labour working in the irrigation department into daily rated workers and issuance of regularization orders of 180 daily wagers working in rural development department.
A May Day function was organised by State Central Labour Union at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan.
Minister for Higher Education Abdul Ghani Malik was the Chief Guest while
Provincial President National Conference Rattan Lal Gupta was Guest of Honour.
A large number of employees of Public Sector and government departments were present on the occasion.

Those who spoke in the function Mohd Aslam Goni, Ajay Sadhotra ,Vijay Laxmi Dutta, Harbans Singh, Sham Mehra, Swaran Singh Chib, Sanjeev Bali, Deepa Mehra Nirmal Singh, Vinod Singh, Balvinder Singh, Ejaz Qazmi, Karan Singh and Parshotam Singh.
In a separate function, the J&K CITU state committee organized a massive rally comprising of different unions and association including Railway loading and unloading Workers Unions, Industrial Estate Workers union, Bhatha Mazdoor Union, Salal NHPC Staff and Workers Union Insurance Sector Employees Association, Banking Sector Employees Association in front of press club Jammu. The workers holding red flages, banners and placards in their hands and shouting slogans for the unity and intergrity of the toiling masses of the world.
The rally passed through the various bazaars of city including Dogra Chowk, Jewel Chowk, Gumat Bazaar, City Chowk, Raghunath Bazaar and culminated at Indira Chowk.
While addressing the rally, Comrade Om Parkash, General Secretary J&K state CITU said the working class all over the world cannot forget the revolutionary sacrifices and achievements of the Heroic struggle of 1886 in Chicago May day struggle resulted in achieving the right of the workers for 8 hours working day and the rest 16 hours of the day for recreation time particularly with their family.
Comrade Sham Parshad regional Secretary of CPI (M) while addressing the rally said May Day celebration will do justice only if the working class takes this entire situation into account and comes to the conclusion that there is no alternative to the revolutionary struggle for socialism.
