| Bar Association demands homeland for Kashmiri Hindus | | Major Development | | Rustam
JAMMU, May 1: It may appear unbelievable but it is a fact that Bar Association Jammu (BAJ), premier organization of lawyers and advocates, has demanded bifurcation of Kashmir in order to set up a separate homeland for the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus. Remember, it put forth this demand during the April 23 interaction between the BAJ delegation, which was led by its president B S Slathia, and the three interlocutors.
It is significant to note that the BJP and the RSS, the so-called pro-Hindu and pro-India outfits, have vehemently opposed the demand put forth by the displaced Kashmiri Hindus seeking the creation of a separate homeland in the Kashmir Valley, despite the fact that both these organizations want New Delhi to confer the Union Territory status on the trans-Himalayan Ladakh. That the BAJ has made common cause with the votaries of a separate homeland does suggest that the BAJ leadership has taken cognizance of the agony and difficulties of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus and it deserves appreciation. The displaced Kashmiri Hindus do deserve a separate homeland. For, they just can't live with those who forcibly evicted them from their homes and hearths two decades ago. For, the stand for India and those who evicted them stand for separation from India, as also for a theocratic and primitive system.
However, the BAJ, like the BJP and the RSS, has not demanded a separate dispensation for the people of Jammu province. It is something intriguing and surprising, notwithstanding the fact that it has demanded Chief Minister from Jammu province. What could a Chief Minister from Jammu do for the people of his province, when the existing politico-constitutional arrangement gives veto power to Kashmir and when New Delhi is at the back and call of the Kashmiri leaders, including pro-Pakistan Syed Ali Shah Geelani. It is for the BAJ leadership to explain as to why it has taken recourse to two contradictory approaches - one for the displaced Kashmiri Hindus, victims of fundamentalism, and other for the people of Jammu province, who are also victims of fundamentalism and who, like the Kashmiri Hindus, have also been rendered ineffective and unreal for all practical purposes.
However, to write all this is not to undermine the significance of the demand the BAJ leadership put forth on behalf of the suffering and persecuted displaced Kashmiri Hindus. Hence, it would not be out of place to refer to here what the BAJ delegation told the interlocutors in this regard. Such an exercise is imperative to put things in perspective. The BAJ delegation told the interlocutors: "It is shocking that the Jammu province, which is already deficient in terms of infra-structural development owing to lack of political will (on the part of the Kashmir-centric state government) and the resultant lesser financial allocations, is facing an increased pressure on its infrastructure because of the forced migration of lakhs of people from Kashmir region and other higher reaches, who ultimately had to take refuge…in Jammu…People of Jammu province feel morally bound to receive these hapless victims of secessionism whereas the (successive) governments have consistently turned hostile to the pressing need of humanity. The identity of these forced migrants (Kashmiri Pndits) from Kashmir region is at stake and the BAJ strongly supports the rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants in the Kashmir Valley by carving out a separate homeland, if necessary, and a protection to their basic human rights in Kashmir can be a force to resist the secessionist tendencies in Kashmir region."
It is clear from what the BAJ leadership told the interlocutors that the attitude of the people is undergoing a significant change, with the politically awakened people diagnosing the people's ailment and suggesting rational solutions to overcome the problems being faced by certain sections of society in the state. There are reasons to believe that other formations, social or otherwise, would surely come forward and join hands with formations like the BAJ and work with a single-minded devotion for the regeneration of the socio-political and economic life of the people of Jammu province. |
