Rules out Cong 'role' in 'cash for vote' controversy
Horse trading in politics wrong: Soz
5/1/2011 11:55:12 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 1: J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president and senior Congress leader Prof Saif-u-Din Soz today categorically ruled out Congress involvement or any role in the 'cash for vote controversy' during recently held Legislative Council polls in which 7 BJP members voted in favour of the coalition candidate. Prof Soz asserted horse trading in politics is a wrong practice and he doesn't approve of it nor was there any scope or need for the Congress to indulge in such act.
"Horse trading certainly spoils the spirit and principles of politics ….it should not be acceptable for any party", Prof Soz said while speaking to media on the sidelines of a function. The PCC chief vociferously dismissed the allegation of Congress involvement in the controversy and contended the party has requisite number of 27 MLAs for the victory and therefore it had no need to go for asking votes from any other party.
The veteran Congress leader avoided to reply a query related to the role of coalition ally NC saying he has no mandate nor any authority to speak on their behalf. However he said all the 11 members of BJP should have as a matter of principle and ethics voted in favour of their own candidate. "It is in any case the personal matter of BJP…….I cannot make any further comment", Prof Soz said. To another query the PCC chief said he was in no position to hold enquiry into the matter as to who had given cash to whom. " I cannot do it or even ask for it…….if you can do it go ahead…..", he said.
Though the political dust has settled down in the 'cash for vote' controversy, Prof Soz's assertion of ruling out Congress role in the matter assumes significance. It is pertinent to mention that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already washed off hands and categorically asserted his party was 'far away' from the controversy and the allegations of government having given cash to BJP MLAs were baseless.
