EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU: At a time when people were getting used to quieter days, militants today struck the high-security Udhampur, which has army's northern command headquarters, by triggering a car-bomb explosion that killed a milk-seller and wounded at least five others.
The Maruti-800, in which the powerful RDX-laden bomb was planted, was parked on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway near Bermah bridge in Udhampur, about 65 km from here.
The bomb, suspected to have been triggered by a remote control device, went off at about 8.30 am when Maj Gen D S Pathania was crossing the bridge in his vehicle, police sources said.
Sources said though Pathania had a providential escape, glass panes of his car were damaged.
However, SSP, Udhampur, Surinder Gupta said he did not know if the army officer was crossing the bridge when the blast occured. The car was blown up and damaged so badly that its registration number could not be found by police.
In the explosion, milk-seller Kuldip Sharma, son of Parmanand Sharma of Dabbar Morh near Krimchi, Udhampur, was killed on the spot, while five others survived with critical splinter injuries.
When the blast occured, Kuldip was passing urine near the bridge. He came there regularly to deliver milk at a nearby teastall. The injured were identified as Pawan Kumar, son of Kali Ram of PTA, Udhampur, Sham Lal, son of Gillu of Omara, Madan Lal, son of Ram Chand of Dadoori, Udhampur. Balwan Chand of Udhampur and Shoukat Ali, son of Abdul Karim of Omara Morh.
All of them were admitted to district hospital, Udhampur. The condition of three of them was stated to be critical.
The SSP said some suspects had been rounded up and their sustained questioning was on. He hoped that the blast accused would be arrested soon. The blast was so powerful that glass panes of some vehicles, which were in the close vicinity of the bridge, were broken and window panes of nearby houses and other buildings got shattered with its impact.
Security was stepped up on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and in the winter capital city soon after the blast. Cops could be seen carrying out checking of vehicles and frisking of passengers and pedestrians. It is pertinent to mention here that the militants struck at a time when a tight vigil was being maintained all along the Jammu-Srinagar road in view of the movement of durbar move offices to the valley.
