Traffic restored on Srinagar-Leh highway after five months | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 2: Srinagar- Leh National Highway was today thrown open for vehicular traffic from both sides as the vital road link reopened after a gap of around five months. The strategically important 434-km-long long road connecting Leh with rest of the state remained cut off due to accumulation of more than 10 feet of snow between Sonamarg to Meenamarg. The road was thrown open for vehicular traffic by General officer Commanding (GoC) 15 Corps, Lt General SA Hasnain and Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon in presence of Chief Engineer Beacon Project Brigadier TPS Rawat and other participants at Sonmarg. The last flight of Kargil Courier also operated this morning airlifting stranded passengers at Srinagar and Kargil, a border town on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. According to official sources, the traffic on Srinagar-Leh plied from both sides after nearly five months. Though the highway has been cleared, the vehicles still have to pass through huge wall of snow on both sides of the road. However, the road connecting the far-flung and remote areas in Leh and Kargil districts in Ladakh region and border districts in Bandipora and Kupwara remained closed though the authorities have already started snow clearance operations. The snow clearance operation, launched by the Border Roads Organisation, responsible for the maintenance of the highway, was launched in March this year from both sides of Zojila pass. More than 10 to 15 feet of snow had accumulated on the highway which was closed on December 1. Traffic on the highway was suspended from November 26 following heavy snowfall at Zojila pass. The road was to reopen on April 27. However, it was delayed due to heavy rains in Sonamarg plains and snowfall in higher reaches. Late fresh snowfall in April has affected snow clearance operation as the majority portion of the highway was an avalanche -prone zone, official sources said. The snow clearance work was completed on April 29 and vehicles of the Army carried out a test drive to check the safety of the road for civilian traffic on April 30. |
