| Press Freedom Day Celebrated by Iqra Foundation | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Rajouri, May 3: Speaking on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, at Behrot in Rajouri Shabir Rather has said that it is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of Press Freedom; to evaluate press freedom, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Universal declaration of Human Rights states that, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”. While expressing his serious concern over state of freedom of press and security and safety of journalists in Jammu & Kashmir, Rather said that media is not less than a challenge for persons who dare to choose the profession in present era.
Rich tributes were paid to those media persons who lost their lives during turmoil; he further advocated freedom of press and security of media persons. Rather also urged upon the government that a Press Club and Press Colony be sanctioned at every district HQs so that press community may undertake its professional, result oriented and ethical duties in a more planed manner.
