Obama shows the way, Will Singh tread it?
Scourge of Terrorism & Kashmir
5/4/2011 12:04:12 AM
Rustam
Jammu, May 3: US President Barack Husain Obama has showed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the way? His administration has liquidated perpetrator of 9/11 Osama bin Laden inside Pakistan (Abbottabad), 65 miles north of Islamabad, home to a large number retired and serving military officials and buried the body of Al-Qaeda mastermind at sea after the Saudi Arabia refused to accept the dead body of Laden, who symbolized terror and worst form of fanaticism. The Presidential order was: Catch Osama and kill him.
Osama had inspired the September 11, 201 terrorist attacks, which killed no less 3,000 innocent Americans in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Addressing media persons in Washington, Obama said on Sunday (US time) that the "mastermind of the September 11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people has been killed in Pakistan by US-led forces. Osama has been brought to justice. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, and a terrorist who's responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children. It was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory. Hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky. The Twin Towers collapsing to the ground. Black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon. The wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and destruction."
This is the way the nations should act and take on and liquidate their enemies. Will our Prime Minister tread the path shown by Obama or will he go by what he said on April 18. On April 18, the Prime Minister had said that he would consider his job well done only if ties between the two countries - India and Pakistan -- are normalized. "(Resolution of) Five would be too much. Well, if I can succeed in normalizing relations between India and Pakistan, as they should prevail between two normal states, I will consider my job well done.'' he said so while on his way back from Kazakhstan.
It is not a secret that Manmohan Singh government has taken a series of steps to revive ties with Islamabad, the most recent being the decision to resume cricketing ties with Pakistan. Earlier, the Prime Minister had invited his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani to watch the India-Pakistan World Cup semi-final at Mohali on March 30, thus giving a diplomatic fillip to normalizing relations with Pakistan and he had done so overlooking the national sentiment that was against any kind of truck with Pakistan, which is directly involved in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack that culminated in the cold-blooded murder of more than 165 innocent persons, including half a dozen Americans.
In between, the Indian and Pakistani Home Foreign Secretaries and Home Secretaries had met in New Delhi to iron out differences between the two countries and prepare ground for the resumption of the stalled composite dialogue process. The Indian Prime Minister and the Indian Foreign Ministers had, in addition, met their Pakistani counterparts at Thimpu and the objective was reportedly the same.
Besides, in between, according to the Wikileaks, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had led the "push for peace with Pakistan despite misgivings from members of his own administration," including the former National Security Advisor, MK Narayanan. However, it is not a new revelation. Everyone knows in India about what the Prime Minister has been doing since July 2009, when he, along with his Pakistani counterpart, issued a joint statement in July 2009 at Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt) - statement that de-linked the dialogue process from terrorism and virtually recognized the Indian involvement in subversive activities in Baluchistan. What the Prime Minister did at Sharm-el-Sheikh was indeed a complete and blatant U-turn and he had to face the people's ire on this count leading to the reversal of the Indian stand on Sharm-el-Sheikh.
There is nothing wrong if the relations between the two countries are harmonized. But the question is: Will the Pakistani establishment, which is toothless and powerless and depends upon the all-powerful Army and the ISI, for its survival, reciprocate the Indian goodwill and unilateral gestures? It is the Pakistani Army and the ISI which exercise veto power and regulate and control the country's foreign policy. Another question to be asked is: Will the Prime Minister's new initiative help the Congress in any way in salvaging its image that stands dented because of the multi-crore 2 G Spectrum scam, the multi-crore Common Wealth Games scam, the Adrash Housing Society scam; the scams connected with the India's greatest tax swindler Hasan Ali, the passport scam, the fake pilots' scam, the scams in which the Union Agriculture Minister Shard Pawar is involved and so on? The answers are not in the affirmative. The answers are a big NO. Why? Why because Pakistan doesn't believe in reciprocity or in the principle of give and take. It believes in territorial expansionism; it wants to grab Jammu and Kashmir and its waters by hook and crook; it wants to establish its control over the strategic Siachin; it wants to establish its control over Sir Creek; it continues to believe in the dreaded two-nation theory and it is of the view that since Jammu and Kashmir is a Muslim-majority state, it has to become part of the theocratic Islamabad; it not only wants to annex the state, but it also wants to dismember India to avenge its defeat at the hands of the Indian Army and the emergence of Bangladesh as a sovereign country; and so on.
The fact of the matter is that Islamabad shall never ever deviate from the path it has been treading ever since 1947 and there should be no doubt it. Leave alone Beijing and Washington D C., which are at the back and call of Islamabad for reasons not difficult to fathom. Yes, Prime Minister Manohan Singh can cultivate Pakistan but only after compromising the Indian position in Jammu and Kashmir. He can buy peace temporarily by conceding all the demands being put forth by Pakistan or by handing over Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan on a platter. He can also strengthen friendly ties with Pakistan by endorsing the Pakistani stand on Sir Creek and by rendering the borders porous or irrelevant. Has the mandate to do so? He doesn't have the mandate to subvert the Indian sovereignty and appease Pakistan at the cost of the territorial integrity of the country. The nation will lynch everyone who would try to undo all that India has done thus far to defend its sovereignty and protect its territorial integrity.
Hence, what should Prime Minister do? He should tread the path charted by President Obama, who has said the American interests are paramount and non-negotiable. If the Americans could kill their enemies inside Pakistan, why can't New Delhi do so and capture and eliminate the likes of Hafiz Saed within Pakistan, who masterminded the Mumbai terror attacks and threatening the very existence of India as a nation? The national mood is like that of the Americans. Prime Minister Singh needs to acknowledge it and realize that peace with Pakistan is just not possible.
