Compare BAJ with Dogras' social and literary groups and find the difference | Dogra Certificate | | Neha Jammu, May 3: Bar Association Jammu (BAJ), which played a unique role during the 2008 Amarnath land agitation days and contributed a lot to the success of that great movement, was perhaps the only organization that took up - apart from discussing issues of the state, national and Jammu import -- the issue of Dogri certificate with the interlocutors. The BAJ leadership told the interlocutors that it "strongly opposes the opposition to the issuance of Dogra certificates to the people of Jammu province." It said it was surprised to witness the opposition to Dogra certificate from those who "support secessionism", and added that the threat administered by the critics of the Dogra certificate that there would be disturbances in the event of the state and the central governments not withdrawing the said order constituted an extreme form of "intolerant mindset" and it was not acceptable to the BAJ. Earlier, the BAJ leaders led by BS Slathia had taken up the issue with the Union Health Minister and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and had reportedly threatened to take the plunge and take on those in Kashmir and in the government opposed to the Dogra certificate order. It is a different matter that nothing came out of their efforts. But this is not the issue under discussion. The issue under discussion is who did and who did not take up the issue. The BAJ did take up the issue and identified itself with the Dogras and it is important. Compare the attitude of the BAJ towards the issue of Dogra certificate with the so-called Dogras' social and literary organizations or with those groups whose leadership masquerades as champions of the Dogras, Dogri literature and Dogra culture and heritage and you would find the difference. The Dogra Sadar Sabha did not utter a single word in support of or against Dogra certificate. The Dogri Department of the Jammu University didn't utter a single word in support of or against the Dogra certificate. There was one odd Dogri Professor who did go public and supported Dogra certificate. The Dogri Sanstha, which also what may be termed as claims itself to be the saviour of Dogri literature and Dogra heritage and promoter of Dogri language and culture thought it prudent not to speak on the issue. The Dogri Sanstha is otherwise known as a pro-active institution. It invites one minister or the other at regular intervals to inaugurate this or that programme or to get through them this Dogri book or that Dogri book released. Not a single Dogri writer, poet, artist, singer, musician and painter thought it desirable to identify himself/herself with the Dogra cause. These elements always remain active otherwise, with some of them even found lobbying with the concerned elements in the establishment for seeking favours and so on. Ironically, even the Jammu Province People's Front, the so-called amalgam of over two-dozen organizations, also remained neutral as if to support the issue of Dogra certificate would be no less than committing a grave crime. The truth, in short, is that each and every so-called Dogra and Dogri-centric group remained neutral and everyone knows who remains neutral. It is hardly necessary to elaborate this point, as those who are running these organizations and thriving using the name of Dogra and trading Dogri language know who remain neutral. Had they intervened as the Kashmiri civil society intervened, they would have been welcomed in Jammu by one and all. What they didn't do that, as their preferences were different. It doesn't augur well for them and for the future of the Dogras of Jammu province, who have been at the receiving end since 1947. |
