Farmers face water shortage; allege delay in cleaning of Canals | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 4: Due to the apathetic attitude of the irrigation department, farming community is facing lot of problem ahead of the vegetable sowing season in Jammu region as they are not getting water through the canals. The reason is that department has failed to clean up the canals on time leading to water crisis in many parts of Jammu region. Though crores have been spent on the modernization of the canals, rivers and other water resources to help the cultivators, but nothing has helped the farmers. All the canals of the Jammu region are in dilapidated condition due to the presence of garbage and other waste material. Farmers maintain that 70 percent people of the state are totally dependent on the agriculture. They maintain that canals are their lifeline since they cater to the irrigation needs of the large number of farmers in the Jammu region. They also said that in some parts of R.S.Pura, water has been released into the canals without cleaning them. They added that even then, R.S.Pura, Bishnah and Samba are facing acute shortage of water. Farmers said that it is a sowing season and in next few days, they would begin sowing seeds of rice. Shambu Nath-a farmer of R.S Pura said that we are dependent on the agriculture as this is the source of our income and these days are very important for the farmers and delay in timely de-silting of canals has resulted in non-availability of water for irrigation which will harm the crops. When contacted Chief Engineer Irrigation, Ashwani Kumar said as per the requirement of the location the department is providing them the required amount of water. He further said that wherever required, department cleans the canals.
