| Unscheduled power cuts making life hell | | Sweltering summers, helpless people | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 5: Despite tall claims by the Power Development Department (PDD) that the power scenario will improve in the state, with the onset of the summers, unscheduled power cuts are making the life of the people worse. The unscheduled power cuts both in areas where electronic meters have been installed and also in non-metered areas across the state have already started showing no improvement in power scenario as compared to that of last year. These power cuts are showing the actual picture of the tall claims of PDD. Due to unscheduled power cuts, during day and nights people are facing hardships these days. Most of the residents complain that despite the assurance by the Department that metered areas will get regular power, they still had to face frequent power cuts. “Government is only making tall claims in the name of streamlining the system and scenario is completely different on the ground”, Rajesh Sharma said. Some locals said that the power curtailments in un-metered areas had been increased from 8 to 12 hours only to provide electricity in the metered zone. “Why should we face problem for the fault of department”, Sushma Devi a resident of Narwal said. In many areas continuous power cuts has put people in discomfort. Besides this there is also shortage of water supply which is causing major problems for the Jammuites. Though the consumers are expecting a better summer this year, it seems the prevailing power scenario is not going to improve, as the officials concerned have failed to address the issue adequately. “Government has purchased large quantity of power from other states, central and other agencies so the deficit in power generation from our own power projects hardly matters,” said Shalin Kabra, Managing Director, J&K Power Development Corporation (JKPDC). He added that they were generating the maximum power from their own projects.
