Salman Bashir loses cool over Chidambaram's demand
5/5/2011 11:58:42 PM
It seems to be the story of a guilty man trying to conceal his guilt. This applies to Pakistan.Whenever New Delhi asks Islamabad to initiate action against those involved in terrorist strike in Mumbai in 2008 it loses its cool.Islambad either pleads innocence or assures that it will take action against the perpetrators of Mumbai strike if the charges were established. The latest instance of Islamabad losing cool was when India demanded action against those involved in Mumbai attacks and camping in Pakistan has been the one from the Foreign secretary of Pakistan,Salman Bashir who described as "outdated" India's demand for action against the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai attacks in the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden., He said that such statements were not "helpful" for the peace process."It is a familiar line (and) outdated. It is some part of the old system repeating itself," Bashir has said. This line of thinking is mired in a mindset that is neither realistic nor productive. Such statements are not very helpful," he said, referring to the recent resumption of dialogue between the two countries after a gap of over two years.Bashir said "good meetings" have been held between the Home and Interior Secretaries and the Commerce Secretaries of India and Pakistan and Islamabad was "talking of cooperation at various levels".
Reports said that Salman Bashir lost his cool soon after Home Minister P Chidambaram noted that bin Laden had been killed by US forces "deep inside Pakistan" and said this underlined India's "concern that militants belonging to different organisations find sanctuary in Pakistan"."We believe that the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack, including their controllers and handlers who actually carried out the attack, continue to be sheltered in Pakistan," he said. Chidambaram called on the Pakistan government to arrest persons whose names have been handed over by India and to provide voice samples of persons suspected of being the controllers and handlers of the attackers. It was but natural for Salman Bashir to lose his cool when P.Chidambaram opened his mouth at a time when the entire establishment in Islamabad had been in an embarrassing situation following the killing of Osama.Osama's elimination in the US strike fully exposed Pakistan. And Nobody was prepared to believe that Pakistan Government especially the Army and the ISI had no knowledge about the hideout of Osama.Pakistan feels embarrassed because Islamaic radicals have started berating Pakistan for having sided with Washington in Osama elimination operation.Whatever may have been the reason for Salman Bashir to give vent to his anger New Delhi is not responsible for it.
India is not to be blamed because during the last over two years Islamabad has not been able to take strict action against those involved in the Mumbai strike. Islamabad needs to feel grateful to New Delhi for having resumed talks despite the fact that New Delhi's demands were not conceded.India had supended talks following the Mumbai terrorist strike and conveyed to Pakistan that t alks would be resumed only after perpetrators of the Mumbai mayhem were tried and penalised. It was not done and New Delhi had no compulsions for resuming the process of dialogue. It did restart the process of parleys simply for the purpose of promoting cordial ties. Salman Bashir needs to understand the reasons that prompted Chidambaram to ask Pakistan to act against those involved in Mumbai carnage.Soon after the killing of Osama in Abottabad near Islamabad had convinced Chidambaram, like others, that Pakistan continued to be used as a safe sanctuary by terrorists
and hence he wanted Islamabad to act fast and dismantle the terror infrastructure. This very sincere advice acted like pepper on Pakistan's wounds. For promoting friendly ties and a terror free environment in South Asian region Pakistan needs to act against hideouts of terrorists.
