Climate change assumes disastrous proportions of global catastrophe: Soz | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, May 6: The Pradesh Congress Committee President, Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, Friday, said that climate change has assumed disastrous proportions of a global catastrophe and government of India has put these concepts in proper focus.
Addressing International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) in Kuala Lumpur, he said, “Fortunately for India, we have remained in the forefront in the movement for sustainable development. The environmental and ecological concerns have remained in sharp focus in India for the past three decades. A conference on Environment in Stockholm in 1970 had caused great stir among the international civil society leaders by bringing the environmental concern into sharp focus for the first time.”
“It was then that a pointed reference was made to a situation of global warming and the need to reduce the emissions, generated by green house gases was stressed, in a big way. Fortunately, the then Prime Minister of India late Indira Gandhi had attended that conference who felt inspired to launch a movement for environmental protection in India. It is thereafter that India has been in the forefront of the movement for the cause of the sustainable development and environmental protection,” he added.
Prof Soz said the climate change and it disastrous impact on human life has received tremendous attention and government of India has put these concepts in proper focus. “By the time the international community discussed the possibility of adopting a comprehensive protocol to combat climate change at Kyoto (October 1997), India had earned recognition for being in the forefront in the discussions and dialogue on the necessity of adopting mandatory responsibility for the reduction of emissions on the basis of UN framework convention on climate change which had clearly laid down that while reduction of green house gases was a common duty for all nations,” he said.
“It was a differentiated responsibility and the developed world had to do the first duty. India shared the victory at Kyoto with G77+8 and the Kyoto protocol was born. Unfortunately certain countries in the industrialized world have not so far ratified the Kyoto protocol. Meanwhile, the catastrophe has assumed disastrous proportions and the vast majority of the global society is now wanting to have a much more effective and strong protocol on the reduction of emissions than Kyoto protocol.” Prof Soz added.
