Let New Delhi and Army follow "silence before you act"principle | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 6: Was it necessary for the Army Chief, Gen. V.K. Singh, to announce India's capability of carrying out Abottabad type operation? Did he not envisage the strong reaction from the establishment in Islamabad? Those who criticise the Army Chief say "the US never boasted of its capability of carrying out kill Osama operation on the soil of Pakistan. It made public the contours of the Abbotabad operation only after its commandos completed the task." Political analysts are of the opinion that politicians, bureaucrats and senior Army functionaries in India have shown their taste for issuing verbal reactions to any action. They have not learnt to imitate Chinese politicians and Army commanders. The Chinese are the last to react to any development or event in the world. The controversy over Gen. Singh's statement had not died when the Northern command's Army commander Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik echoed what his Army Chief had sounded. In fact just a day after Army chief Gen VK Singh said the Indian army was "competent" to carry out an operation similar to the one conducted by the US in Abbottabad against Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, Army's Udhampur-based Northern Command chief Lt Gen KT Parnaik said his troops are prepared to take action against militants inside Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) as and when it is decided. He did not stop here an added that the government of India was well aware of the militant training camps in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. "When the time comes, we will be able to take action as and when it is decided," Parnaik stated. He even hinted that the Indian troops had the capacity of carrying out the US-type surgical and covert operations on Pakistani soil to target militant training camps and LeT founder Hafiz Sayeed and United Jihad Council (UJC) chief Syed Salahuddin. This very statement and the one given by the Army chief attracted a strong reaction from Pakistan. The Army and the Government in Islamabad reacted sharply warning India against any Abbottabad-like "misadventure", saying it would be responded to "very strongly" that could lead to a "terrible catastrophe". The warning came after a meeting of the Corps Commanders chaired by Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani which decided to reduce the level of US military personnel in Pakistan and threatened to review intelligence cooperation with it, if a repeat of "violation of sovereignty" Monday like occurred. Reacting to statements by Army Chief Gen VK Singh and Air Chief Air Marshal PV Naik that India has the capacity to carry out an operation similar to US forces eliminating Osama bin Laden, first Pakistan Foreign Secretary told a press conference that any country that attempts to "mimic" the unilateral act of the US will find it has made a "basic miscalculation". We see a lot of bravado in our own region. There have been statements that have come from across (the border), by senior people from the military and air force, which state that this can be repeated. We feel that sort of misadventure or miscalculation would result in a terrible catastrophe," Three years ago just a mere statement from the Indian politicians and Army functionaries that the Indian Army had the capacity of demolishing terror infrastructure in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir drew such a strong reaction from then President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, that New Delhi had no other alternative but to keep silent. Musharraf had then threatened to use nuclear weapons against India in case of any Indian misadventure against Pakistan. Political analysts wish to ask one question. If the Indian Army has the capacity to carry out Abottabad type operation why has it then not been directed by the Government to carry out the operation during the last 20 years. During these years Pakistan sponsored insurgency had spelt ruin in Jammu and Kashmir and in other areas of the country. Hence act before one speaks should be the mantra that New Delhi and the Indian Army should chant. |
