| Congress ‘show of strength’: Jammu city on hostage | | | Jammu, Nov 19 The entire Jammu city was today taken to hostage by putting in unprecedented security arrangements for Congress rally resulting into traffic chaos and hardships to commuters. It was again a hard day for common man using public transport; courtesy Congress convention organized to mark the birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Commuters faced lot of hardships as most of the commercial vehicles were hired by the party to transport workers from different areas of Jammu district, besides transport was diverted from all main routes leading to parade ground, venue of the rally. The party, sources said, had made all arrangements to show its strength entrusting each block president to arrange at least three buses from their respective areas. Even SHOs of police stations within and peripheral areas of the district were asked to keep a record of the buses of crowd coming from their areas. “The block presidents of the party were not only asked to arrange the buses but also ensure that good number of people attend the rally”, sources within the party told News Agency of Kashmir, on the condition of anonymity. While the party made all the arrangements to show off its strength, it led to the problems to the people due to shortage of commercial vehicles and diversion of vehicular movement. “I had to wait for more than three hours to reach my home”, said a resident of March area, adding, “More than five buses on our route has been engaged by the Congress rally thus putting the local residents to hardship”. Radha Kumari, a student of twelfth standard who had to visit Parade area for her tuition said, “The politicians should understand the problems arising out of such rallies being organised within the city areas”. She was of the opinion that such rallies should be held in the periphery considering the difficulties common man has to face. Unprecedented security arrangements were seen with huge deployment of police and para-military forces in the entire city. The clear directions from the authorities to ensure incident free rally kept all the senior police officers on toes throughout the day. The police had laid special nakas within and outside the city and vehicles were being thoroughly checked. |
