Prof Gupta too seeks stay on 'proceedings', albeit in 'soft' tenor | Writes letter to Kohli, reminds matter is subjudice | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 6: A day ahead of last day of giving their replies of show cause notices to the High command, veteran BJP leader Prof Chaman Lal Gupta instead wrote a 'letter' to the chairman of Disciplinary Action Committee OP Kohli, urging stay on the disciplinary proceedings initiated against him contending this was required as the matter is sub judice in High Court. Prof Gupta has also maintained that in the event of his request 'not favoured or considered' by the high command, he would comply with basic instructions of giving detailed explanations of the allegations leveled in show cause notice. In what can be clearly deciphered from the tone and tenor of the contents of the letter circulated to the media as well, Prof Gupta has contrary to revolting and defiant mood of other suspended members, appears to have turned soft in responding to the show cause notice, though asserting the similar points of questions related to parametres and criteria adopted by the high command in identifying him for cross voting during Legislative Council polling on April 13. In the formal letter, Prof Gupta has pleaded innocence while vehemently denying the allegations in the notice as baseless and biased. The senior leader has also sought to distance himself from the entire controversy and expressed dismay over what he has described as Parliamentary Board having defamed him at the fag end of life, despite the fact he has served the party and partymen throughout the political career. "It would not be out of place to mention that similar allegations as the one leveled in the show cause notice are pending before the Hon'ble High Court of J&K against all the eleven MLAs........ Matter in issue which is of grave nature involving question of facts, law and my integrity are pending before the Hon'ble High Court and also before you......Since allegations are of grave nature and sub judice, in my opinion, it would be better to stay the disciplinary proceedings initiated by you, which is requirement of law also", Prof Gupta has maintained in the letter. Interestingly , Prof Gupta using a soft language urged OP Kohli to inform him at the earliest in case his request for staying the proceedings could not find favour so that he could submit detailed explanations to the show cause notice. "The documents relied upon and which are made the basis of allegations have also not been made available to me, for which request is made to dispatch the same at the earliest", the contents of the letter further said . In whatever way the chairman of the committee may respond to the letter written by Prof Gupta remains to be seen. Though it is only a letter but sources say since the deadline of filing replies to notices expires tomorrow, the high command may treat this as only the reply.Sources said that the senior and seasoned leader instead of adopting a confrontationist attitude has chosen to be soft and compliant, though initially he too remained defiant in the attitude so far as the response to high command action is concerned. This, sources said is because Prof Gupta has realized and perhaps come to know that high command has taken serious view of the defiance and dithering steps in going to different quarters instead of responding straightway to the notices. Will this changed attitude help or not in the long run, remains the moot question. |
