Congress likely to pay a heavy price for its negative attitude | | | Neha JAMMU, May 6: The Congress has, it seems, lost the invaluable opportunity which the BJP and the Panthers Party provided to it on a platter by violating the mandate and voting in favour of the parties the Dogras of Jammu province considered as anti-Jammu and pro-Kashmir and separatist-friendly. The action on the part of the BJP and the Panthers Party had infuriated the Dogras to the extent that the leaders of these two parties did not dare to come on to the streets and mingle with the estranged Dogras for days. They remained confined to the four walls of their houses fearing that any outside movement on their part might provoke the infuriated Dogras to strike. The fear was so palpable. But things have of late started changing. Courtesy: The Jammu-based Congress ministers, the Jammu-based legislators and the Jammu-based Congress leaders and their indifferent, nay negative, attitude to an issue that is very dear to the Dogras, irrespective of their caste and creed. The case in point is the revocation of March 25 order that had entitled the Dogras to obtain Dogra certificate and enjoy a couple of relaxations in rules governing recruitment to the central paramilitary forces, including the CRPF. The Jammu-based Congress ministers, legislators and leaders have been behaving as if nothing has happened in Jammu province and that their indifferent attitude to the ongoing controversy over the Dogra certificate issue will not mar the electoral prospects of their party. It is obvious they are living in a world of the past and in isolation. The situation is not that favourable for the Congress party. The situation is becoming grim for the Congress party with each passing day, with the common Dogras expressing their disgust and accusing the Congress leadership of mortgaging their self-respect and dignity to remain in the good books of the anti-Dogra, intolerant and arrogant Kashmiri leadership. Some of them have even gone to the extent of accusing the Congress leadership of making common cause with Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who has described the slain Osama Bin Laden as a "martyr." The fact of the matter is that the Congress has given an issue to the otherwise questionable parties like the BJP and the Panthers Party. The manner in which these two parties have started raking up the issue of Dogra certificate does suggest that the leadership of these two parties have found in the issue an opportunity to strike back and paint the Congress leadership black. If they continue to rake up this sensitive and emotional issue in the manner they have started raking up, they would certainly mobilize the public opinion in their own favour and against the Congress. And, if at all it happens, the result would not be encouraging for the Congress. In fact, the Congress would have to pay a very heavy price. The Congress strategists have to sit up and work out a plan that assuages the hurt psyche of the Dogras. Not to do so or to continue to adopt a negative attitude to the issue of Dogra certificate would be only to enable the BJP and the Panthers party to recapture their lost political ground. Can the Congress afford to weak and irrelevant in Jammu province, the land of the Dogras, which is its core constituency? It just can't, and, hence, the need for retrospection and concerted action on the part of the Congress. |
