11 killed, 3 hurt as sumo falls into gorge at Mahore | | | Early Times Report KATRA, May 6: Tragedy today struck the sleepy and dusty Damni village in Mahore, Reasi, when a Tata sumo cab skidded off the road and fell into a 400 ft deep gorge, resulting in the instant death of 11 persons, including driver and two women, and multiple injuries to three children. The incident took place at about 11 am when sumo driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve at Damni, police sources said. Three families of Deda Gool, Mahore, who were related to each other, Thursday hired a sumo (JK14B/2095) for Shahadra Sharief shrine in Rajouri. After paying obeisance at the shrine where they reached yesterday evening, they decided to stay there for the night. Early this morning, they started their journey back home. However, when they reached Damni, few kilometres short of Deda Gool, the driver could not negotiate a sharp curve as a result of the sumo fell into the roadside gorge. Sources said 11 persons were killed on the spot, while three children survived with critical injuries. The dead were identified as Khurshida Begum (45), wife of Abdullah, her son Mohammad Sharief (20), Abdul Rashid (42), son of Abdul Razzak, his son Atta Mohammad (15), Gulam Mohammad (35), son of Abdul Ghani, Haneefa Begum (40), wife of Abdul Aziz, Abdul Aiyaz (52), son of Qadir, his son Mohammad Iqbal (30), Imitiaz (22), son of Mohammad Sadiq, Majid (30), son of Hussain, and driver Manzoor Ahmad (22), son of Gulam Mohammad of Heila, Gool. The injured included 8th class student Arif (14), son of Abdul Aiyaz, Haroon (3), son of Abdul Rashid, and Imran (2), son of Mohammad Iqbal. The dead and the injured were swiftly taken out of the gorge by police with the help of locals and removed to primary health centre, Mahore. Following deterioration in their condition, the injured were later airlifted to the GMC hospital, Jammu, where their condition was stated to be stable. Sources said after post-mortem, all the 11 bodies were handed over to their families for last rites. Quoting eyewitnesses, sources said the belongings of the victims' were scattered and blood was splattered near the accident site. A case in this connection was registered at the Mahore police station. The rescue operation was supervised by Reasi SSP Keshav Ram Choursia who had reached the spot soon after the incident. Mahore SDM Sher Singh and Mahore police station SHO, Inspector Arun Kotwal were also present on the occasion. |
