Calls for effective magistracy, expeditious disposal of passport applications

ANANTNAG, MAY 07, 2011 – Minister of State for Home, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, has called for imposition of complete ban on cultivation of poppy in South Kashmir districts, which has borne the brunt of drug menace over the past few years. He lauded the efforts of police in destruction of poppycultivation spread over thousands of kanals across South Kashmir.
The Minister said this while chairing a review meeting of South Kashmir Range (SKR), here today.
Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Mr. Kifayat Rizvi, DIG SKR, Mr. S. A. Wattali, DIG CRPF, Mr. Neeraj Kumar, SSP, Anantnag, Mr. R.K. Jalla, SPs of Kulgam, Mr. Mubasir Latifi, Pulwama, Mr. Amit Kumar, Shopian, Mr. Mumtaz and wantipora, Mr. Muhammad Irshad, besides several other senior police officers attended the meeting.
Expressing serious concern over alarming rise in consumption of illicit drugs in Anantnag and adjoining districts, the Minister asked the police authorities to squeeze the activities of people involved in poppycultivation and narcotics trade. “The menace of drug addiction has gripped the Valley with mostly youngsters falling into the trap. We need to put an end to this menace and crack down on poppy cultivators and drugtraffickers,” he maintained.
Earlier, DIG SKR briefed the Minister in detail about matters pertaining to the law-and-order and general security situation in South Kashmir Range.
SSP, Anantnag and SPs of Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Awantipora, in separate presentations, briefed the Minister about policing in their respective districts.
Asking the magistracy to be proactive and in the forefront to defuse emerging law-and-order situations, the Minister called upon police and civil administrations to establish closer coordination to achieve the desired
results. “On occasions, issues like bad roads and lack of power and water, create law-and-order problems that can be best avoided by effective administration,” he emphasized.
Mr. Nasir Aslam also asked for speedy disposal of passport applications in a time-bound manner, adding the people should be facilitated by acting on their applications expeditiously.
He asked the police administration to adopt more people-friendly measures so that the faith of the people on this institution further increases.
The Minister once again reiterated his commitment to prioritize the issues of personnel management, up-gradation of police posts, sanction of new police stations, filling up of vacant posts, training of personnel,procurement of new vehicles and special recruitment drives.
Later, the Minister inspected the under-construction Anantnag District Hospital. The Deputy Commissioner informed the Minister that the work on the project is going on in full swing and will be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
