Don't draw a parallel between 9/11 and 26/11, says US
Crossing The Line
5/8/2011 12:36:55 AM
Rustam
Jammu, May 7: The arrogant United States (US), which considers itself to the world master, is crossing the line ad insulting the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The US yesterday refrained from drawing a parallel between 9/11 and the deadly Mumbai terror attacks and virtually expressed its unwillingness to support similar "hot pursuit" Indian effort as was done by the US Special Forces in Abbotabad (Pakistan) on May 2 to catch and kill Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D. C.
"I don't want to speculate too broadly about an operation that was clearly unique in the history of the US and the history of the world, where we had an individual who was possibly the most wanted man in the world and had perpetrated heinous crimes against not only American citizens but citizens around the globe. I don't want to draw too broadly a picture here. What we've said all along is that this was an individual where, when we had actionable intelligence against him, we acted upon that because we believed he was a direct and imminent threat to the United States, State Department's spokesman Mark Toner said.
This was the Toner's response to a question "if the US policy of 'right to self defense' applies to other countries, including India as the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks are roaming freely inside Pakistan." His response was as provocative as it was outrageous. He asked India to forget 26/11 and refrain from going in for some hot pursuit to nab and kill the enemies of India and those who killed hundreds of innocent Indians. The message from the US was that New Delhi should condone the Pakistani crimes. It was nothing but a manifestation of the US's naked belief in two rules, one for the US and other for India.
Admitted that 9/11 terror attacks left 3,000 odd persons, Americans, Indians and others included, dead and hundreds of others wounded and what the Al-Qaeda dread terrorists did to the US on that black day was unpardonable. Again, admitted, and rightly, that the US had the right to launch a covert attack deep inside Pakistan and kill Osama to avenge 9/11 and bring to book the killers and those sought to destroy the US. In fact, everybody heaved a sigh of relief when he/she came to know that the US had eliminated the world's most wanted terrorist. That's the reason the killing of Osama was hailed as a victory of the civilized nations over that regressive, primitive and intolerant school of thought to which Osma belonged.
But the US outraged the Indians when it refused to equate 9/11 with 26/11 and virtually directed India not to go in for some hot pursuit to catch and kill Hafiz Saeed and others who were responsible for the gruesome murder of more than 165 innocent civilians, including at least six Americans, in the country's financial capital, Mumbai, on 26/11 and who plus certain elements in the Pakistani establishment continue to pose a direct and imminent threat to India. The Toner's stand was all the more provocative considering the fact while the US has witnessed just one 9/11, India has witnessed umpteen 26/11s, including the December 13, 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament - attacks that left thousands and thousands of innocent civilians dead and an equal number of other fatally wounded, some of them becoming physically handicapped. Leave aside those thousands of Indian soldiers and paramilitary personnel and policemen who also lost their invaluable lives while fighting the menace of terrorism and discharging their duties towards the nation.
The fact of the matter is that the US has exposed itself and its duplicity and created an impression in India that the US administration is all out to help Pakistan shield and protect the perpetrators of 26/11. This is absolutely unacceptable. New Delhi must assert and tell the US not to provoke India and insult the victims of terrorism in the country. It must tell the US that India is a sovereign country and it, like the US, has every right to defend itself and bring to justice all those who have committed crimes against India and who wish to dismember the country. In fact, New Delhi must take recourse to coercive diplomacy and take all steps to catch and eliminate the likes of Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Abrahim. This is the only option left for India and it has everything to win and nothing to lose by going in for hot pursuit. We are not a banana republic that is bound to accept dictates of any Tom, Dick and Harry. We are a sovereign republic like the US and we are entitled to all those rights to which the US is entitled.
