Early Times Report
Jammu, May 7: May 8 is an important date in the history of Kashmir. On this day eighty-one years ago, two cousins launched a formal movement against the Dogra regime. The decision was taken during the rasam-e-qul of a lady at Mohallah Haji Rather, Kachgari Masjid in Fateh Kadal area of Sher-e-Khaas.
Moulvi Bashir Vakil and Munshi Naseer discussed the miserable plight of Kashmir in the lawns of erstwhile Teachers Training School at Magarmal Bagh near Khar Maidan which is now called exhibition grounds. They decided to do something for the people. After discussing the idea with Bashir's father, Moulvi Abdullah Vakil they set up a reading room at Fateh Kadal. Bashir was a teacher and earned Rs 15 a month. They contributed Rs 15. Some chairs were hired. A few old newspapers were purchased. However, it soon dawned on them that a good amount of money was needed to keep it running. Bashir begged in Edigah. It was Eid. After offering congregational prayers, Bashir sought help in the name Of Allah. He collected Rs 90. The amount was enough to keep the reading room running. But, people started playing chausar and chess there. They also indulged in gossip. The duo pondered.
Meanwhile, the daughter-in-law of a shopkeeper, Hasan Peer, who lived in the neighborhood of Moulvi Abdullah Vakil passed away. The shopkeeper's brother, Muhammad Sikander, worked in the Telegraph office. He was a close friend of Bashir and Naseer. The duo persuaded him to allow them to host the rasam-e-qul of the deceased. Sikander was told about the plan. He agreed. Bashir and Naseer wrote more than one hundred letters to various people. On May 8, 1930, the rasam-equl was hosted. The duo had to spend Rupees 9 on tea and snacks, which was offered to the invitees. Sheikh Abdullah, who had returned from Aligarh on April 12, 1930, ignored the invitation and did not attend the meeting. The meeting was informed about the cause. An open invitation was extended to all to join hands against Dogra repression. Three people - Ghulam Nabi Gilkar, Muhammad Yahaya Rafique and Muhammad Rajab (MA LLB) - joined the group then and there. The group came to be known as Reading Room Party in this meeting. The invitees were told to keep secret.
