Omar weaves political tales
5/9/2011 9:51:55 PM
Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has denied that he has differences with two cabinet colleagues,Abdul Rahim Rather, and Ali Mohd.Sagar.He has denied that there are contradictions between him and his father Dr Farooq Abdullah.Within a short span of his political career Omar has tried to be a wise politician but in the end he seems to have failed to hide the truth. One instance. When he was asked by a TV channel about contradictions between him and his father,Dr Farooq A|bdullah, on dialogue with Pakistan Omar said "there are no contradictions.” On being told that Dr Farooq says India should not talk with Pakistan and Omar saying something different the Kashmir Chief Minister said "Dr Farooq is a union Minister and I am the Chief Minister.I have my responsibilities he has his own. I talk as Chief Minister he talks like a union Minister.” Amazingly Omar Abdullah has faulted on two counts. One, Farooq used to oppose Delhi wishing to hold talks with Islamabad but during the last about one year he too has been favouring reopening of the channels of dialogue between India and Pakistan. When Farooq opposed talks he had a reason for it.He wanted Pakistan first to stop aiding militants, operating in Jammu an Kashmir before trying to hold talks with India.
Secondly,Omar's mistake is that he has unnecessarily defended, that too wrongly,Farooq for opposing dialogue with Pakistan. It is either a slip of tongue or ignorance when Omar has stated that Farooq opposes talks with Pakistan because he is a member of the Union Cabinet.Doesn't Omar know it that besides the Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh, the Minister for External Affairs has been in favour of resumption of dialogue with Pakistan.Had Delhi been opposed to the process of dialogue with Pakistan there would have not been a number of meetings at the foreign ministry level and the level of home ministry during the last one year.During this period there have been a number of meetings at foreign and home secretary level too.Hence if Farooq has been,at one time, opposed to talks with Pakistan he has not been doing so in the capacity of union Minister. It was his individual idea when he opposed talks with Pakistan. And if,of late,he has been favouring dialogue with Pakistan he has been doing so as a member of the union cabinet. And if there are differences between Omar and Dr Farooq those are based on the style of governance.
Prior to the rise of civilian strife in Kashmir during the summer of 2010 Omar would not allow his father to interfere in his(Omar's) work.Reports indicated that Omar had slept over some the suggestions given by Farooq Abdullah. It was during the civilian strife that Farooq Abdullah stepped in for saving the Chief Minister's "gaddi" for Omar.No doubt Rahul Gandhi came to the rescue of Omar Abdullah when the centre was toying with the idea of replacing Omar by his father as Chief Minister,Dr Farooq too played his cards well in the corridors of power in New Delhi that ensured survival of Omar as Chief Minister.Since then the wedge between the Father and the son,in between there is no holy ghost ,has been narrowed down. It was during the time when the wedge between Omar and Farooq had become wide that Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Mohd.Sagar ,supposed to be staunch supporters of Farooq Abdullah, had become critics of Omar.Their only grouse was that the young chief Minister simply listened to the advice of some youngsters, who usually surrounded him, without bothering to seek guidance and advice from seasoned party leaders, some among them having worked with Omar's grandfather and father. If Rather and Sagar are members of the cabinet they deserve it and by retaining them in the cabinet is not an indication of smooth relations between them and the Chief Minister. If Omar has retained them in the cabinet it is out of his compuslions because experience and intelligence of Rather is no longer a secret.(eom)
