‘PDP decries continued arrests, misgovernance’ | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 9: Strongly criticising the government policy to extend its arrest and detain drive, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said it would resist attempts at enforcing silence of the graveyard in the state.
In a statement here today the party president Mehbooba Mufti said the state government was trying to exist only through strong arm tactics against its people while being unable to perform on governance front.
“Arrests and continued detentions are the only gift from the coalition government to a people still nursing the wounds of innocent deaths, injuries, disabilities and destitution caused during the previous two years” she said.
Mehbooba said the government by continuing to hold teenagers and the aged in detention was actually discrediting not just itself but the entire process of resolution and reconciliation that was supposed to have been initiated in the wake of last year’s atrocities on defenceless and peaceful citizens.
Referring to the latest slapping of PSA against Qazi Yaser, a religious leader of South Kashmir Mehbooba said it made no sense to deny peaceful citizens and religious leaders their liberty merely on suspicion.
“It is immensely dangerous to link such highhanded conduct with Panchayat elections or the sensitive issue of Amarnath Yatra”, she said and added the peaceful conduct of Yatra over the years, increasing number of pilgrims and people’s support to it is enough to disprove government contention.
The attempt to link prominent local personalities with trying to disrupt the yatra, she said, is not just a lame excuse but is fraught with apprehensions of serious nature in and outside the state.
Similarly, bringing in panchayat polls as a reason to detain the Qazi is an insult to the people who have been participating in large unprecedented numbers in these elections. Mehbooba said her party will continue to focus on denial of civil liberties and human rights in the state at the hands of the government.
“No democratic or resolution initiative can create an impact unless people on the ground witness the relief that such measures are intended to bring” she said maintaining that the present government had virtually undone any gains made over the past on these fronts.
