Farooq's visit to Chib raises speculations | | | SRINAGAR: On the first day of Durbar in the summer capital, National Conference patriarch and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, drove all the way to Civil Secretariat---only for a one-on-one meeting with Minister of Medical Education R S Chib. Farooq's rare visit to Civil Secretariat in Srinagar, perhaps first time since he demitted office of Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister in October 2002, came as a surprise for political as well as bureaucratic circles. Nobody knew what exactly made Dr Abdullah call on his one-time friend. Then a well-connected political figure and late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's close associate, IAF employee-turned-politician, Chib had been inducted by Dr Abdullah in his 1987-1990 coalition government as Minister of Health. Informed sources told Early Times that a number of Ministers were present in their respective offices when Dr Abdullah appeared, rather dramatically, at the Civil Secretariat, and walked straight into Chib's room. He did not go to see any other Ministers. Sources said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had left for a visit to Rakh-e-Aarth when Dr Abdullah arrived in. Within minutes of Dr Abdullah's departure, speculations were galore in corridors of Civil Secretariat that Chib was likely to be inducted as the new Deputy Chief Minister. Informed sources, however, dismissed the currency of rumous as speculative and insisted that a reshuffle in Cabinet was not imminent. |
