Pandit women defeat Muslim candidates in Baramulla | | | SRINAGAR: In Kunzar area, on the borderline of Baramulla and Budgam districts, two Kashmiri Pandit women created the a history with the help of their Muslim supporters in the current Panchayat Elections. Sources said that Mrs Asha w/o Radha Krishen defeated her nearest rival, Sarwa Begum, in the election for Panch in village Wusan with a reasonable margin of votes. Even as the Muslim vote accounted for over 80% in the ward, Asha was returned with massive support of the voters from the majority community. "Most of us believe that Ashaji can prove to be far more assertive and a better peoples representative that the Muslim candidate Sarwa Begum", a Muslim voter Ali Mohammad Wani said. He said that Asha's margin over the Muslim contestant was 11 votes. Sources said that in the adjoining village of Dhobiwan, on Srinagar-Gulmarg Road, non-Muslim female candidate, Sunita w/o Virji, was returned with over a dozen votes against the Muslim candidate Zubaida. Like Asha, Sunita too was declared as Panch inspite of the fact that Muslim voters were over 80% of the population in Dhbiwan. |
