Panchayat empowerment committee meet held

JAMMU, May 10: High powered empowered committee set up by the government to look into the issue of empowerment of Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) held its meeting here today under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, Madhav Lal.
This was the fourth meeting of the Committee in series of meetings held in view of its recommendation regarding transfer of funds, functions and functionaries to the elected three tire PRIs. The functions to be transferred to the village Panchayats, Block Development Councils and District Planning and Development Boards were discussed in detail.
Based on the discussion with the line departments like Agriculture Production, Animal & Sheep Husbandry Departments and other departments, the Departments were directed to frame draft orders regarding devolution of funds and manpower to the three tier Panchayati Raj Institutions. All the concerned line departments were directed to complete the exercise at the earliest.
Consultants from the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj, B. D. Singh and R. K. Sinha were also present in the meeting. Meeting, among others, was attended by Principal Secretary, Agriculture Production, Iqbal Khanday, Principal Secretary, Planning & Development, Khursheed Ahmad Ganaie, Principal Secretary, Health/Urban Development, Suresh Kumar, Commissioner-Secretary, Forests, Shantmanu, Commissioner-Secretary, CAPD, Pradeep Gupta, Commissioner-Secretary, Industries, Umang Narula, Commissioner-Secretary, Rural Development, Yedullah.
