NC destroying historic character of Shehr-e-Khas : PDP | Naeem laments demolition of timber bridges | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar May 10:- Peoples Democratic Party has expressed deep anguish at the wanton destruction of all symbols of Kashmir's glorious heritage by NC led government especially in Srinagar. In a statement the party chief spokesperson Naeem Akhtar said the government was deliberately tampering with the distinct character of built heritage in the capital city which is proud to be repository of the most ancient living civilization in the region. Akhtar said after fiddling with even the highly revered symbols of religious heritage like various shrines the shock of demolition of historically important bridges by the state government came just on the first day of its functioning in Srinagar. The marring of Srinagar's architecture and culture, as has been the history of the ruling National Conference, was announced by none other than Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself. Regretting that Srinagar was fast losing its historicity with its monumental icons being demolished or tampered with on one pretext or the other by the present government, Naeem maintained that the unique character of wooden bridge architecture could be a great tourist attraction but is apparently beyond the comprehension of a blind government. He said the Hindustan Times report on the subject has rightly pointed to the historic relevance of the Zero Bridge and the Zaina Kadal and its utility, if preserved. Modern construction technology should enable the government to construct new bridges without destroying the unique symbols of our distinct past, he said. The anger of heritage conservationist is also well founded in the matter, he added. The PDP said it apprehended Srinagar would lose its historic reference point with the demolition of the two bridges. Besides, the Zaina Kadal is in the monuments' list that needs to be preserved in the state. The state government will be violating the law itself if it demolishes the Zaina Kadal bridge given the Bill on preservation of heritage in Srinagar. The decision to demolish the two bridges reflects once more how distant Abdullah is from the Srinagar city, its culture and architecture. It seems Abdullah has little knowledge of Srinagar when he announced Rs. 8.92 crore bridge over River Jhelum at Zainakadal at the cost of existing bridge. The PDP government, he said, had built a new bridge next to Zaina Kadal during its regime and the same could be widened in accordance with increasing needs of area. One fails to understand the state government spendthrift approach and poor planning for Srinagar city. There are many issues pertaining to Srinagar that need immediate attention and people suffer on daily account ranging from roads to drains, Akhtar said. Akhtar demanded that the state government should immediately stop tampering with architectural and cultural aura of the city. Enough damage has been inflicted by the NC in the past and the exercise has to stop. The NC has turned downtown Srinagar into a unlivable slum during its 30 year long rule while it only recently diverted about Rs=50 crore from the city development funds released by the central government. Even funds for Dal Lake have been diverted to other regions. Now instead of correcting the mistake, more are being committed to deprive the city of what is left in the form of art and culture lamented the PDP spokesperson.
