LoC in Kashmir witnessing sudden surge in infiltration bids | | | Jammu: After remaining peaceful for last four months the line of control in Kashmir valley is witnessing hectic activity as large group of infiltrators are making desperate bids to breach the barbed wire fence. Highly places sources Tuesday revealed, "in the first week of May around 20-30 infiltrators have infiltrated from South Kashmir and are camping in dense forest areas before heading to their hideouts". The infiltrators were launched inside the Indian territory from terrorist training camps close to the line of control, official sources said. Official sources have confirmed that both Lashker-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen are running training camps housing nearly 250-300 militants, waiting for the next opportunity to sneak into Indian territory. Even though official figures quote the number of terrorists infiltrated in May at around 8-12, liberal accounts place the figure at 30. GOC-in C Northern command Lt-Gen KT Parnaik had also expressed fears of increase in level of infiltration with the melting of snow along the mountain passes. According to latest intelligence reports, the latest spurt in infiltration may be related to the pressure that Pakistan has come under following the gunning down of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by US forces in Abbottabad. The terrorist outfits may be trying to deflect their men to Kashmir, and the agencies see recent firing at Indian posts in Poonch as an attempt at giving cover to the infiltrating terrorists. On the other hand, IG BSF Jammu range Siddarth Chattopadhyaya Tuesday said, International border between the two countries has not witnessed any exchange of fire in the last 11 months and complete peace is prevailing in the region. |
