Pushing Dogras to the wall would be suicidal

Jammu, May 10: The anger of the Dogras of Jammu province was never so palpable as it has been since April 28, when the NC-Congress coalition government disgraced the Dogra community by withdrawing the March 25 order on Dogra certificate, notwithstanding the fact that the revocation of the said order had in no way adversely affected them as they would continue to enjoy two relaxations in rules governing recruitment to the Indian Army. The issue was not that the state government withdrew the said order. The issue was the manner in which the state government did it. The state government did it creating an impression that it had no regards for the Dogra psyche.
It is perception that matters and the perception here among the Dogras is that the state government undermined the very identity of the Dogra community by endorsing the viewpoint of the Kashmiri ultras, including Geelani, Mirwaiz, Abdullahs, Mehboob Begs, Muftis and Salah-ud-Dins and certain perverted elements in the Kashmiri civil society and community of commentators. They had termed the government order a conspiracy; they had described the order as divisive; they had rejected the order saying it had been issued to enable the Dogras to divide the state and set up Duggar Desh; they had dubbed the order as a move calculated to enable New Delhi and the Jammu Dogras to neutralize the influence of those in Kashmir seeking separation from India or demanding independence from India and they had described the order as a calculated move to assimilate the Muslims of the Jammu province. The accusations were wild and communally motivated and charges ill-designed and highly provocative and insulting.
The government should have rejected out-of-hand all these charges and held its ground in the larger interest of the state. But it failed and disgraced the Dogras, thus creating an impression that an insidious influence is at work to humiliate a community of more than five million people, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs included. It's true that the Dogras have refrained from creating a furore. But this should not make the NC-Congress coalition government feel that things are fine in Jammu. Things are not fine in Jammu. Things have deteriorated to the extent that those who outraged the Dogra community will have to pay a very heavy price in the days to come. There should be no doubt about it. The reactions of Dogras pouring in the office of the Early Times clearly suggest that an extreme form of anger has gripped the Dogras across the Jammu province. It is time for the state government to realize that pushing the Dogras to the wall would be suicidal.
