SKUAST (J), SMVDU in for infrastructural development | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 11: Two major universities in the Jammu region, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu, and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University,are in for a major infrastructural development.
Since the two universities have plans of adding new faculties and disciplines a decision has been taken to construct additional buildings for teaching,extensions and research activities. The central grant for infrastructural development been raised from R s.68 crores to Rs.100 crores. University sources said that an amount of Rs.90 crores have been earmarked for completion of unfinished complexes and buildings and for construction new faculty complexes besides the auditorium. Sources said that the amount was to be spent in two phases.In the first phase Rs.45 crores were being spent on completing some of the unfinished buildings, including the auditorium.Sources said that during the last about four years infrastructural development had been kept on hold following reports on corrupt practice having been resorted to by the former vice chancellor.The case is under instigation. The present vice chancellor has been given the green signal by the state Government and the I CAR for upgrading the infrastructure needed for teaching, research and extension activities. Similarly the Mata Vaishno Devi University plans to spend Rs.10 crores on construction of three blocks for teaching and research activities.Besides this part of the amount was to be spent on construction of host el for boys and girls.There is already one girls hostel which is being upgraded and expanded. These construction activities were to be completed within the current year. Reports said that the Minister for A|agriculture,G.H.Mir,has urged the scientists of the two agricultural universities to expedite research work so that new seeds were evolved ensuring higher yield in wheat and paddy. Mir has also suggested to the university scientists to help the farmers in Jammu and Kashmir to take to double cropping practices.Mir has stated that the state's total dependence on import of food grains was the result of mono-cropping practices that have been in vogue in the state during the last 60 years.
