Affirming position as leader, Prof Gupta 'dispatches' letters to all MLAs | Says, he feels all 11 are guilty in cross voting matter, seeks 'response' | | Saroj Razdan Jammu, May 11: In a further twist to the complexities of BJP cross voting matter which can actually cause 'ripples' in the party leadership ,senior leader of BJP Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, affirming his authority as Leader of the Legislative Party in J&K Assembly, has written letter to all the members of the House seeking their views and response over the cross voting controversy for which the high command has suspended 7 MLAs. Even as the suspended MLAs from day one have been publicly making it loud and clear that Prof Chaman Lal continues to be their leader in the House, maintaining defiant postures against the high command, it is for the first time Prof Gupta has established written communication with the MLAs in capacity of the Leader of the party in the House through a formal letter. This in itself assumes importance as the move is being seen as giving loud and clear message in the political corridors as well within the party that even as he falls in the camp of 7 identified by the high command as guilty of indulged in cross voting act, there is no change in his designation as head of the Legislative Party. In a letter with simple and brief contents dispatched to all the 10 MLAs individually on May 5 , Prof Gupta while expressing in explicit terms that the matter had assumed 'serious' dimensions for all 11 MLAs, has sought the response of the members and asked them to write to him in detail what they feel about the cross voting controversy. He has emphasized even as party high command has suspended 7 members , the matter had become serious for all the 11 members. When contacted, Prof Gupta replied in affirmative having written letters to MLAs as leader of the Legislative Party. " I want to know what is in the mind of the members and how they react to it…….…….all of need to sit down and seriously discuss the matter so that we arrive at some reasonable decision", he said in a insisting tone, adding "I feel it is not just 7 members instead all 11 of us who are guilty of cross voting act….". Without fear of contradiction or denial, Prof Gupta maintained it had become imperative to sit and discuss in the wake of the fact that high command has not adopted fair parameters in identifying those who are actually guilty. "As far as I am concerned I say it in unmistakable and categorical terms that I have voted in favour of party candidate", Prof Gupta maintained. He also said two MLAs from the other camp (those given clean chit) have acknowledged receipt of his letter and even agreed that they would give their comments but refused to divulge the names. However, one of the MLAs declared as innocent in the cross voting controversy denied having received any such letter so far. Pertinent to mention here is that Prof Gupta has written the contents of the letter in manner which not only depict his assertion as Legislative Party leader but also reflects his political acumen that the matter needed to be discussed by the Legislative Party since it involves the MLAs so that they reach at a reasonable decision. Even though he has been asserting his authority politically as the Leader of Legislative Party by holding meetings with the cadres , workers in the midst of the controversy, the step taken by him is being seen as maintaining this assertion on technical grounds where he still enjoys sound footing. He apparently wants to convey he continues to be the Member of the Assembly and has the support of 6 other members in the 'guilty' group, which is one third of total strength of party in the House. |
