Administration still clueless for Sadhus’ accommodation
5/12/2011 11:30:39 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 12:
The thousands of ‘Sadhus’ performing annual Amarnath yatra are the integral part of the holy pilgrimage but surprisingly the district administration is keeping an ‘indifferent’ attitude towards them as till date no suitable arrangements for their accommodation have been made.
Since the yatra is around the corner and the registration process got underway on May 10, the Sadhus have started to reach Jammu, however, on their arrival here they have no clue of where to put up till the first batch of yatris leave for the holy abode of Lord Shiva.
The ‘Sadhus’ face such peculiar situation every year as the district administration always remain uncertain as to where these religious preachers be accommodated. This uncertainty over providing a proper accommodation by the administration forced the ‘Sadhus’ to take refuge in temples till their stay in city.
The district administration on its part makes a sort of formality by arranging lodging of ‘Sadhus’ in banquet halls owned by Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) but there is no provision of Langars (Community Kitchens) which again is a problem for ‘Sadhus’, who have to go out to have food.
Last year also, the ‘Sadhus’ protested the lack of eating facilities inside banquet halls’ premises.
Sensing the need of a proper accommodation for ‘Sadhus’, the tourism department has requested the district administration to identify a suitable place to house the ‘Sadhus’.
According to sources, the district administration asked the tourism department to use the piece of land behind Yatri Niwas, Bhagwati Nagar for Sadhus’ accommodation; however, the department refused the site as the septic tanks of the Niwas have been constructed there.
Sources further disclosed that authorities are trying to identify a site in and around Bhagwati Nagar to make temporary arrangements for putting up Sadhus.
After finalising a place, pre-fabricated structures would be erected there, sources added.
