Digiana residents rue irregular water supply, hold protest | Traffic on NH remain suspended | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 12: The vehicular movement on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway remained disrupted for about half an hour this morning following a strong protest demonstration held by the residents of Digiana and adjoining localities over the irregular water supply in their area. Agitated over erratic water supply in their area for the last few days, a large number of people assembled near Digiana Ashram Gurdwara and blocked the ever busy highway as a mark of protest. Fuming with anger, the locals came in the middle of the road which led to the halting of traffic for around one and a half hour. Soon a good number of vehicles got stranded on both sides of the road due to the noisy demonstration. Shouting slogans “PHE Hai Hai”, the irate residents lamented the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department authorities for shortage of water in and around Digiana. The protesting people alleged that despite frequent reminder to the PHE officials, the department is least concerned over ensuring proper and regular water supply to their homes. “We had left with no other option but to come on roads in protest as for the last 5-6 days all of us have not received a drop of water amid hot and humid weather conditions…… Our children are forced to drink contaminated water,” a woman resident of the area angrily said. In the meantime, the PHE officials along with police personnel reached the spot to pacify the agitating crowd, however, the protesters refused to relent and keep on demonstrating. It was after much persuasion by senior police and PHE officers, the residents agreed to remove the blockage. The PHE authorities assured the residents that water supply in the area would be regularized soon.
