Diabetes awareness programme held | Over 15% Diabetes prevalence in Jammu: Jitendra Singh | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 12: Diabetes Care Foundation (DCF) in collaboration with Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP) organized here today a diabetes awareness programme at which nationally renowned diabetologist, professor and author Jitendra Singh was the chief guest. In his address, Jitendra Singh said that in and around Jammu, the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is over 15% and while there is a huge upsurge of diabetes among Kashmiri Pandit displaced community, even the rural population in Jammu region has begun to get affected in a big way. Jitendra Singh said that two major challenges in the field of Diabetes during the next decade in India would be (a) diabetes in young and (b) diabetes in women particularly pregnant women. He said youth is the most productive part of one’s life and diabetes management at this age has to ensure protection of heart, eyes and kidneys for rest of the life. Similarly, if diabetes can be prevented during pregnancy, it can cut down the future tendency to develop diabetes in the newborn. Jitendra Singh made a special emphasis on rising prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents which is the future harbinger of a host of metabolic diseases linked to diabetes and Insulin Resistance. For this, Singh also underlined the role of parents and teachers. Early detection and strict control of blood sugar is the cornerstone of successful diabetes management said Jitendra Singh. Ashok Chaturvedi, convenor DCF spoke about the various diabetes programmes and camps organized by DCF. Prominent BVP leaders S.C. Gupta, Vanita Kohli and P.N.Jalla were present on the occasion. Free tests for blood sugar and lipid profile were carried out, and free medicine was distributed with the assistance of messrs USV Ltd. a leading Multi National Company with stakes in anti-diabetes drug manufacturing.
