Panchayat poll performance to invigorate PDP: Mehbooba
5/13/2011 12:18:20 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, May 12:
Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has said its expanding democratic space as a result of village institutions like panchayats would add significantly to the party’s ability to pursue its political and development agenda more vigorously.
Addressing a workers meeting at Wagam Chrar-e-Sharief today, Mehbooba said the PDP would channelize people’s power more effectively to press for resolution of the political aspect of Kashmir problem and simultaneously try to bring in speed and transparency into developmental process.
The PDP president said Jammu & Kashmir was facing peculiar problems and it could not be compared with any other state of the country or any area in the entire region. On the one hand it had remained a bone of contention between two neighbouring countries and on the other the people had suffered serious fallout of uncertain political conditions and the unchallenged monopoly of a single party over the decades. But now the discourse about Kashmir had changed and a new consensus had evolved in which all political parties in the state, whether they acknowledge it or not are obliged to talk in holistic terms, she said.
Mehbooba said the overwhelming participation of the people in Panchayat elections should be viewed positively as an assertion of the people as the real stakeholders in power and governance. The same realization had sent them to the polling both in all election since 2002 but unfortunately the present NC led government had let them down on every front whether it was pursuing the political agenda of the state or carrying on the development process that was set in motion by the previous coalition, she said.
Mehbooba said the Panchayat elections should serve as an eye opener to the government which could still try to retrieve some its lost credibility by genuinely working for the welfare of the state as no amount of publicity, photo opportunities, hollow announcements and catering to vested interest would work any more.
She said the Panchayat poll results indicated people’s will to take things into their own hands in a democratic manner and if they find themselves unable to function properly it could be a huge set back to the whole process, which necessitated devolution of more powers to them.
