| 25 years of archaeology celebrated | | | JAMMU | NOV 19 On the occasion of world heritage week (19-25 November) and to commemorate 25- years (Silver-Jubilee) of revival of archaeology in Jammu and Kashmir. The heritage foundation society for the preservation of art and culture heritage in J&K organized a function at Dogri, Sanstha, Karan Nagar Jammu under the chairmanship of Prof. Ram Nath Shastri, Padamshri, and President of the foundation. As main activity and introductory booklet and brochure on an introduction to Archaeology being first of its kind written by Kirpal Singh was released by Prof. Ram Nath Shastri and Prof. Dr. Lalit Magotra president of dogri Sanstha, Jammu. While speaking on the occasion Kirpal Singh gave a brief account of the archaeological movement in India and in J&K. He narrated how Dogra Rulers were the very first among the then Indian state to set up a department of archaeology in J&K under J.C Chatterjee in 1903 thourgh most of work in this field was done by Lal Daya Ram Sahni and Pt Ram Chander Kak. Prof. Ram Nath Shastri, Padamshri in his address lauded the efforts being made by Kirpal Singh in the heritage awareness in the state b writing a series of booklets ad brochures on archives, archeology and museums. He gave an explanation about the various heritage buildings and old localities of Jammu. He asked the general public to take part in heritage related activities to know heritage and to save it. He further appealed to all heritage related institutions both governments to undertake concrete steps to save our rich heritage including Mubarak Mandi. Dr. Lalit Magotra speaking on the occasion expressed dire need of such literature about the archaeology heritage of the state he also appreciated the sole continued efforts being made by Kirpal Singh this field. The writer has dedicated the released booklet to Archeology survey of India as sole, silent saviour of our archaeological heritage whereas the brochure is dedicated to unknown ancient artists, craftsmen, masons and labourers who created edifices of our glorious archaeological.
