Natrang condoles death of Badal Sircar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu May 14: Natrang condoled the death of legendary theatre personality Badal Sircar who died yesterday in North Kolkatta. A prayer meeting was held at Natrang Studio theatre in which all Natrang artists participated. Speaking on the occasion, Natrang Director Balwant Thakur recalled his association with country’s most celebrated playwright and director who gave the theatre world a new theatre concept ‘Third Theatre’. Balwant Thakur had the occasion to interact with the legendary theatre personality at numerable times including in the International Theatre seminar of Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations where both shared the presidium. Natrang, among his other plays did two most popular plays ‘Bhoma’ and ‘Ghera’ in Jammu repeatedly and were appreciated all over. Natrang’s ‘Bhoma’ written by Badal Sircar also won best play award in All-India Cultural Competition. Badal Sircar was the famous Bengali dramatist who was known as the innovator of contemporary Indian theatre. Dismayed by the paucity of good Bengali drama, he began writing plays in the 1950s. He conceptualized what he called ‘Third Theatre’. He brought new techniques and changes in style. He broke the barriers between performers and spectators. According to him theatre must be a collective exercise to awaken and enhance the social consciousness of participants, including the viewers. His plays have been translated in many languages and staged across the world. He has been awarded the Padma Shri in 1972, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1968 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship- Ratna Sadsya, the highest honour in the performing arts by Govt. of India, in 1997
