“Land Use Changes from a Bird’s Eye View” | Workshop on World Migratory Bird Day held | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 14: Department of Environmental Sciences Jammu University and World Wide Fund for Nature India J&K organized one day workshop on World Migratory Bird Day on the theme “Land Use Changes from a Bird’s Eye View” in the department of Environment Sciences. Shashi Kant an eminent environmentalist was the chief guest and Vikram Gour President Consumer Welfare Federation was the guest of honour. Other experts who attended the workshop were C.M.Seth chairperson WWF-India J&K, Anil Raina Head of department Environmental Sciences, Jassrotia coordinator Remote Sensing Department, S.P.S Dutta former HOD, Pankaj Programme Manager High Altitude Wetlands WWF-India, Sanjay Sharma, Rampal, Piyush Malviya and Deepika Salathia of Environment Sciences. Ritu Jasrotia conducted the proceedings. Students and Research scholars of the university departments attended the workshop. Seth while welcoming the participants and distinguished guests said that migratory birds since time immemorial migrate from northern hemisphere to southern hemisphere irrespective of political and geographical boundaries bringing only one message of Love, Harmony and Peace. He said that for migratory birds world is one and man has to learn lesson from these birds. He informed that initially this campaign started in USA in the year 1993 as the International Migratory Bird Day by the US department of Fisheries, Smithsonian Migratory Bird Centre and Cornell laboratory of Ornithology. In India the WMBD started about three years back. In Jammu and Kashmir first mega event was held in the year 2010 at Kala Kendra Jammu in which Photo exhibition, painting competition and lectures were held. In 2011, several events are being organized all over the state including Ladakh. He said that this year celebration is supported by six organizations like International Year of Biodiversity, Birdlife International, Wetland International, East Asian-Australatian Flyway, Worlds Rarest species project and Federal Government of Germany. He said that this year Government of Germany was kind to supply five hundred posters of WMBD to WWF-India J&K for supply to schools and colleges. He said that the main objective of WMBD is to raise the awareness of society through public debates, educational events, Bird watching and Festivals, photo exhibition, etc. The objective is also to influence the policy makers to highlight the need for protection of wetlands and the Migratory Birds.
