Heavy rush in Panchayat elections, upsets separatists | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 14:- Kashmiri separatists are not worried over heavy polling recorded during the first 8-phase Panchayat polling in Jammu and Kashmir. A senior Hurriyat Conference leader, Prof.Abdul Gani Bhat, said, “Elections are of no issue for us”. Asked whether the separatists were worried over peoples participation in the ongoing Panchayat elections Bhat said “Assembly and Lok Sabha elections were held in the state in the past but they did not settle the Kashmir Issue”. In reply to a question Bhat said, “We (APHC) had not given a call for Panchayat poll boycott and hence we do not treat people’s participation as a snub to us”. He said that if Geelani had given the call for poll boycott he should explain what happened to his call. But sources close to Geelani said that the senior separatist leader had not persisted with his boycott call. Prof. Bhat said that participation in the Panchayat elections is a minor issue. People have voted for better roads, power and drinking water. Their vote is not a plebiscite”. Official sources categorically denied that security forces had mounted pressure on people who were forced to participate in the polling in the ongoing Panchayat elections. The sources said that people, including women, voluntarily walked to the polling booths for casting their votes.
