KPC express concern over deteriorating temples, shrines of valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 14: Kashmiri Pandit Conference (KPC) leaders and other important personalities of Kashmiri Pandit community expressed their great concern about deteriorating condition of Kashmiri Pandit's temples and shrines in the valley and also lambasted state government for it's non-seriousness towards this sensitive issue as well as delaying the passage of KP's Shrine and Temple Bill in the state Assembly.
Giving the details about the destruction of shrines and temples in the valley, KPC leadership and others stated that Kashmir was full of temples, shrines, tiraths and other spiritual foundations, which were mostly built by Karkota, Utpla and Pandav dynasties in the valley.
There was no town or village no lake or island in Kashmir valley where these temples and sacred foundations did not exist, which were an inseparable part of Hindu civilization of India.
But unfortunately some Muslim rulers of Kashmir of fundamentalist nature disapproved all forms of idol worship. These temples and shrines attracted the wrath of fundamentalist Muslim rulers who proclaimed themselves the defenders of their faith.
In many respects severity of persecution of the Hindus in Kashmir was greater than the rest of India as well as shrines and temples in Kashmir were exposed to wider destruction.
Even after accession of Kashmir with India, most of the Hindu temples, shrines and Sikh Gurdwaras were exposed to wider destruction, particularly at the hands of PAK invaders in I 947.
During anti-Hindu riots in district Anantnag which spread to other parts of the valley 1986 also resulted in huge destruction of about forty seven temples and shrines in the valley.
During the period of militancy in 1989 to 1991, sixty eight temples and shrines located in towns and remote villages were demolished and destructed as per the white paper issued by the Joint Human Rights committee, when Minister of state for Home, Govt of India, stated in the parliament on March 12th 1993 that thirty eight temples and shrines were damaged and destroyed in the valley.
The demolition of Babri structure in Ayodhya on Dec, 6th 1992 led to wide spread anti-Hindu riots in Kashmir which resulted in instruction of thirty nine temples when seventeen temples were destroyed within three days of time from Dec to Dec 9t in 1992.
At number of places in the valley temples, land, enclosures and temple yards were nibbled away by the miscreants. At some places efforts were made to dispose off the land of shrines and temples. There is no proper record & inventories of Shrines, Temples, Cremation grounds, Hindu child grave yards and others.
In view of these facts Kashmiri Pandits have been demanding for passage of Kashmiri pandits Shrine and Temple Bill to safe-guard and maintain these temples and shrines on the pattern of Gurdwaras and Muslim Shrines looked after by "Gurdwara Prabhandak Board" and "Wakf Board" respectively. In this regard various resolutions were moved by Kashmiri Pandit organizations since eighties as well as during the period of displacement in which we appeal to the Govt as well as political organizations of J&K state for passage of Temples and Shrines Bill in the state Assembly but all in vain. Despite of all asssurance given by national Conference leader Dr Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister Gh.Nabi Azad, Mufti Mohd Sayeed and others ,but nothing has been done so far.
KPC appealed to the state government and the political parties of the state to pass the said Bill in the State Assembly at the earliest without any further delay. This demand has support of all Kashmiri Pandits and Kashmiri Pandit organizations as this issue is connected with the religious sentiments of the whole community, which may kindly be not politicalised, delayed and differed in the interest of any individual or an organization or to any political pal1y.
Youths are most sufferers. They are unheard and ignored. Their long pending demands like age relaxation, one time financial assistance of rupees Twenty-five Lacs and their appointment on suitable post including on gazetted cadre post needs immediate consideration.
Those important KP leaders and others who attended and addressed the function were national president "Kashmiri and it Conference"(KPC) Kundan Kashmiri, National gen.secy A. K. Pandita, state president KPC Satish Pajnoo, state gen. secy. P.N .Pandita, M.K Tickoo, Bharath Bhushan Kaul, Ram Krishan Bhat, Rakesh Kumar.
