EARLY TIMES
Jammu, May 14: Adding fuel to already simmering fire over the hiked petrol prices, the new rates spiraling to astronomical high have left the people high and dry.
As soon as the new announcement over the petrol hike came in, the pumps across the city witnessed long queues of cars and two-wheelers bee lined to get their tanks full, a ritual generally witnessed on such occasions.
With the new prices hiked @ Rs 5 per litre scheduled to come into effect from midnight tonight, motorists linedup at the stations, causing traffic snarls at several places.
People rushed with their cars and scooters to the nearby petrol pumps to have their tanks filled.
Even most of the petrol pumps refused to fill fuel as they installed display boards reading ‘petrol pump out of stock’, ‘no petrol’ etc, since early this evening. At some places, clashes broke out between petrol pump employees and people who had come to fill up the tanks after the former refused to fill up petrol.
The increase in prices of petrol also has received great criticismwith people accusing the government of subjecting poor to uncounted hardships. They also described the decision as a “cruel blow” to thecommon man who is already suffering from sky rocketing prices of commodities.
Rohini Sharma , working in Private sector remarked, “It is just like rubbing salt on wounds of a common man. The prices of petrol are increasing every month and it is virtually impossible to meet the both end of the day. I think it is going to adversely affect my household budget.” Satish Gupta, a PSU employee who was waiting for his turn at filling
station said, “We are not left with many options. Either drive less or earn more will be the only approach for middle class family in view of such a steep hike in prices of petrol prices.”
He said that he was heading home when he got the news about price hike. “I was shocked and immediately took turn to go to the nearest petrol pump,” he maintained. A roadside vendor at Jewel Chowk reacted, “Had the government given a single thought about poor man before giving nod to such a steep hike. It’s not a small hike. Now I feel over-burdened.”
All J&K Petrol Pumps Association president Anan Sharma said, “Our investment is increasing day by day but we are not getting the desired commission. The hike in prices will definitely affect the prices of other commodities. And the government shouldn’t focus on giving hike to the prices of single commodity because it is not going to work.”
