Expert committee set up to finalize the design of health project

Jammu, Nov 20
The work on the up gradation of Jammu medical college is expected to begin within next two months after the row over the site for the project of was resolved. The state
Government has constituted a committee of experts for
finalizing the design of the complex with the
architect from Lucknow. The committee will look into
the soil testing of the site which when completed
will be examined by a central team of experts.
Official sources said here today that the
state
Government had selected an area near Narwal,on the
outskirs of the city,for constructing the
super-speciality hospital but the site was rejected by
the central Government.Later the state offered the
land of the chest Diseases hospital which was to be
dismantled but owing to protest from doctors
and
opposition from the Health Minister,Mr Mangat Ram
Sharma,the Government later decided to acquire 45
kanals of land where a sick silk factory, a few
furlongs from the Jammu Medical college, has been
running for the last several decades.
The state Government has agreed to pay
Rs.22.50
crores for the land. Official sources said that the
Chief Minister has directed the concerned authorities
that the upgradation programme of Srinagar and Jammu
Medical colleges be completed within 18 months.The
sources said that each project is to cost Rs.120
crores and the state's equity share was to be Rs.40
crores.
According to these sources, while the upgradation of
Jammu Medical college had been conceived during the
BJP led NDA Government the upgradation scheme of
Srinagar Medical college was included in the Prime
Minister's Swasth Suraksha Yojna.
The central Government,as per the plan,will spend
Rs.200 crores on the upgradation of the two medical
colleges and out of it Rs.120 crores have been
earmarked for equipment which would be purchased by
the centre.
The official sources said that work on the
upgradation plan in Jammu is expected to begin within
next two months.
