The earlier eight phases of the 16 phased polls in the Jammu and Kashmir witnessed more than 80 per cent polling despite boycott call by the separatists and killing of a woman candidate by gunmen in the Kashmir valley.

Official sources said hundreds of security force and state police personnels had been deployed in addition to security forces already present in these areas to thwart any attempt to disrupt the polls tomorrow.

They said adequate arrangements had been made for Panchayat election in 10 Panchayat Halqas of district Srinagar.

In all, 76 polling stations have been setup for 14467 electorate.

There are 137 candidates in fray for Panch seats while 27 Sarpanchs will also try their luck in these elections.

Sources said in Singhpora block in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, 39714 voters will exercise their franchise in the block tomorrow.

As many as 216 polling stations have been established, they said adding 9 Sarpanchs besides 419 Panch candidates including 128 females are in fray. In all, 22 male and 18 female uncontested candidates also exist in the block. Nine returning and 18 assistant returning officers stand appointed for smooth conduct of Panchayat elections in Singhpora block of Pattan Tehsil in Baramulla district.

The tenth phase to 16th phases will be held on May 21, May 25, May 29, June 2, June 6, June 11 and June 18 respectively.

Panchayat polls are being held through ballot boxes as the state Panchayat Raj Act does not allow the use of Electronic Voting Machine (EVMs) in the polls.

The breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) and some other separatists organisation have appealed people to boycott the polls.

A woman candidate was shot dead and another candidate was shot at and two panchayat ghars were set on fire by miscreants since the panchayat poll process started in the valley.
