Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 16: Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti has said the overwhelming participation of the people in Panchayat elections is a vote against the NC led coalition in the state.

“The defeat suffered by the most of the candidates sponsored by NC throughout the state has dealt a severe blow to the 80 year old party at the grassroots,”she told this in a meeting of the party workers and newly elected Panches and Sarpanches of Ganderbal constituency today.

The meeting was held at Repora in which Qazi Mohammed Afzal also spoke, Bashir Ahmed Mir Kangan , Senior leader Abdul Waheed Dar and Zonal President Ganderbal Gh Rasool Shaheen were also present on this occasion.

Mehbooba said in view of its disastrous performance over the two and half years of its rule the NC had smelled defeat in the panchayat polls and in order to camouflage it elections were held on non party basis.

In this game, she said the NC had been clearly beaten by the people and it could not escape the punishment almost at the same scale as was meted out to the ruling parties in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Mehbooba said the NC was trying to repair the damage suffered by its organization by trying to coerce or bribe the newly elected village representatives to join it in order to stage a fake victory.

The PDP President said her party had come into being to present an alternative to the NC that had monopolized the state for eight decades.

She said Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and shee her self could have continued to stay in congress with prospectus of power but they thought that the state of Jammu & Kashmir for its peculiar problems and character needed a regional party that could fight for its rights and channelize aspirations of its people.

Mehbooba said even though it is the youngest party in the state the PDP provided a distinctly different government in 2002 which introduced for the first time political accountability and performance audit for main stream parties. However , she said the chemistry of politics in Jammu & Kashmir has changed and people would not let any government that failed to perform ,off the hook.

Referring to the performance of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba said under his leadership people’s miseries and sufferings have only increased.

Quoting instances she said it began in June 2009 itself when he declared that Asiya and Nelofar of Shopian had drowned in the Ankle dip water of a Stream ( Rambi Ara) and had on August 15 that year apologized for having said so.

Similarly he promised to learn from the debacle of 2010 when the 120 innocent persons were killed in cold blood by government forces. But when it came to hold any body accountable for it the government brazenly dubbed the victims as criminals, drug peddlers and antinational elements.
