| Police personnel risk their lives on snow bound | | Srinagar-Leh National high way, rescue 150 stranded civilians | | Srinagar, Nov 20 The police personnel of Kargil risked their lives and rescued 150 civilians who were caught up in snow on Srinagar-Leh National Highway. Reports reaching here indicate that following recent snowfall heavy landslides blocked the road near Gumri as a result of which a large number of vehicles and 150 passengers were stranded on the road. Divulging details Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohd Sharif Chawhan, while talking to KNS said on getting a specific information about the stranded passengers who were caught up in snow near Gumri, a team of police personnel associated with TCP Mattayen carried along with them a recovery van of Mechanical Engineering Division Kargil and rescued all the 150 stranded civilians including a driver and a conductor. As many as 11 trucks were, according to Dy.S.P, allowed to move forward, while the rescued civilians were lodged in a building housed by Higher Secondary School Dras. Claiming that no vehicle is stranded from Kargil to Gumri, he said efforts are on to help drivers of stranded vehicles to reach their destinations on Sonamarg side. However he said that truck loads of essential commodities are not allowed to proceed for Leh and Kargil.
