24 houses gutted in fire in remote Samba village | | |
JAMMU, May 16: In a devastating fire that broke out in the remote Sodam hamlet of Samba, 24 houses belonging to 13 families were burnt to ashes this evening. Though the families survived unhurt, a calf and a goat were burnt alive, official sources said. Sodam is 5 km ahead of Gouran, which is 23 km from Samba town. There is no road link between Sodam and Gouran and the two are connected by a rugged terrain. It takes about two hours to reach there on foot. The fire broke out from one of the houses at about 4.30 pm and soon spread to the 12 nearby houses, burning them all to ashes, official sources said. The Sodam residents are very poor and majority of the men in the hamlet are labourers. When the flames engulfed their houses, women were out to fetch potable water from a nearby natural water source and most of the men had not yet returned homes from work, the sources added. As fire tenders could not reach the hamlet, the fire could not be extinguished by the inhabitants with the few buckets of water they had.The houses belonged to Bodh Raj, Prem Chand, Anchal Chand, Chaman Lal, Kali Dass, Vijay Kumar, Bittoo Ram, Rampal, Kakki Ram, Rashpal Chand, Karnail Chand, Sadhu Ram and Dewan Chand. Senior police and civil officers of Samba district administration, including an additional deputy commissioner, reached Sodam late this evening.Sources said they carried with them over 200 kilograms of rice, atta, other daily use items and tents for the affected families. The officials would stay there for the night and return tomorrow after making an assessment of the loss suffered by the people, the sources added.
