Jammu leadership has surrendered interests of Dogras, says JKNPP | Dogra Certificate | | MINCING NO WORDS NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 16: It is not always possible to share the views of the Panthers Party chairman, Bhim Singh, or endorse what he says. He is one political leader in Jammu who is known for inconsistencies. The fact of the matter is that he is simple and straight and democrat of democrats and a well wisher of the Dogras in his heart of hearts. But his weakness is that he can be influenced by anybody anytime. As a result, he remains always controversial, with the discerning and serious people not taking him seriously. Had Bhim Singh remained steadfast and firm on his Jammu-specific agenda, he would have become the most acceptable voice among the Dogras. It is for him to choose a right path and achieve what he failed to achieve despite the fact that he has been in public life since almost four decades. However, yesterday Bhim Singh hit the nail on the head and took to task the Jammu leadership for its failure to protect the genuine interests of the suffering Dogras. Addressing a press conference in Jammu, he not only denounced the Jammu leadership but also put forth a very sound suggestion that the democratically-elected sarpanches be empowered to issue Dogra certificates to all those desirous of joining the Army and the central paramilitary forces. His grouse against the Jammu leadership of which he himself is an integral part was that it surrendered the interests of the Jammu people and his grouse against the NC-Congress coalition government in the state was that it worked against the Dogra identity by withdrawing the order under which the Dogras had been entitled to obtain Dogra certificates. His basic argument was that it is the fundamental right of the people to preserve and promote their identity. In fact, he was absolutely right when he said that preservation of their identity is the “fundamental right” of the people in a democratic set-up. He was also right when he took on the NC and the Congress for what they did to outrage the Dogra sentiment and condemned the Jammu leadership for its utter failure to discharge their obligations towards the constituencies they represent in the assembly. However, to say all this is not to suggest that Bhim Singh and his Panthers Party have done what was expected of them as far as the issue of Dogra certificate was concerned. They, too, have failed the Dogras like all other so-called Jammu-based and Dogra-centric organizations -- political, social, cultural and literary. Had they discharged their obligations towards the Dogras, the situation today would have been totally different and the Dogras had obtained what they legitimately deserve. The Panthers Party leadership would do well to retrospect and refashion their whole approach taking into consideration where they went wrong. Hollow statements would not change the fate of the Dogras.
