‘Will fight for rights of panches, sarpanches’ | Mehbooba concerned over killings | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, May 17 (KNS): While expressing serious concern over the killing of a police constable and attack on a Sarpanch in north Kashmir’s Sopore town on Tuesday, Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti, said that her party would fight tooth and nail for empowerment of paches and sarpanches in the state. Talking to KNS Mehbooba said, “The state government says that it will empower panches and sarpanches after 18 months. PDP will oppose any such move. They have put their lives at risk and contested elections with a hope that they can serve people at grass roots level. But now the NC led collation government wants to defunct them.” The PDP president alleged that state government has ‘ditched’ panches and sarpanches. “We will fight for their rights,” she asserted. Mehbooba also expressed serious concern over the recent rise in killings of policemen and also attacks on panches and sarpanches.
